Silent Hill Homecoming: First impressions
I got Silent Hill: Homecoming (aka Silent Hill 5) over the weekend. We've not played much at all, but so far I'm not terribly impressed (actually, not impressed at all) with it. :( Which is sad, because I'd hoped it wouldn't suck. It doesn't suck, but it falls very flat. It's like eating something really bland after being presented with a sumptuous feast.

On the other hand, do keep in mind that many reviews compared this game to SH2, saying it was the best SH game since that one. And keep in mind that I wasn't blown away by SH2 either. Even then, I think SH2 outstrips this one by far.

#1 complaint: The graphics have taken three steps backwards. Even taking into account that I don't expect the graphics to exceed those of MGS4 or GTA4 (the other two games I own for PS3), I seriously think this game has the graphics of SH2 or worse. The characters' teeth shine pure white in their mouths as they talk, so that every time they open their mouths you can see this slit of white. Their hair is plastered to their head in a blob (this is especially so for the female characters). I'd taken for granted that all modern games are able to render hair in layers that move in a semi-realistic way. Not this one, even on a Blu-Ray disc!

#2: The environments. I don't know why but the soul seems to be gone. Granted, I haven't played much at all, but of what I've seen so far even SH4 had more atmosphere. I'm used to seeing something really cool/creepy within the first 15 mins of playing an SH game. Heck, even SH:Origins had burned Alessa right at the beginning. I've played the first 2-3 hours of SH:Homecoming and I still haven't seen anything like that. All scares were very predictable in a Hollywood-horror sort of way. Case in point: during Alex's nightmare, as you walk along a corridor filled with bodies on gurneys, a body suddenly crashes through the ceiling and dangles there.

Now, when I saw the first body on a stretcher I thought "gaah is that a body? Cool/creepy." Then I walked a few steps on and there was another (looking exactly the same). And another. And another. By which time I couldn't believe my eyes, and when the body crashed through the ceiling I looked at it almost with exasperation. Silent Hill's horror was always very subtle - odd shapes under drapings which the protagonist would refuse to look under, leaving you with that sense of expectation and dread of what was under there even though you KNOW it can't hurt you.

But here? BODY CRASHES THROUGH ROOF AND DANGLES THERE. Plain for all to see. And it doesn't look scary. Or grotesque.

And Alex even brushes it aside when he runs past.

SERIOUSLY.

It gets worse. There's a part where you need to retrieve a Robbie stuffed toy. You find it in a bloody hole in the wall. As you watch Robbie is slowly pulled back into the wall. So you have to stick your hand into the hole to get it.

Yes, you guessed it. Something suddenly catches hold of Alex's arm and he has to struggle to pull his arm back out.

HOW MANY HORROR MOVIES HAVE ALREADY EMPLOYED THIS CLICHE. I would have expected this of Resident Evil, which is based on B-grade horror movies. NOT SILENT HILL.

#3: The monsters. This SH is sorely suffering from the lack of Masahiro Ito. The nurse is straight out of the SH movie, and so is Pyramid Head, pretty much. But the other monsters - so far I've encountered Ferals and Smogs and the claw creature which I don't know what it's called - they just don't do it for me. The Ferals and Smogs are far too brightly coloured. The claw creature has huge claws that just take away the creepy and make it look like a slasher flick. So far the best monster is the one on the elevator, and that's only because it looks the least laughable, not because it's scary.

#4: The glitches. OH THE GLITCHES. My copy is supremely buggy. The controls keep changing. It's driving us nuts. Never, ever have I seen a game this buggy, much less a Konami game. How can this be? When I bought the game the first thing the salesman told us about was this bug. He told us how to change the button config to avoid the bug. Yesterday I didn't set the buttons because I thought I didn't have to if I didn't start a new game. WRONG. Somehow the X button kept turning into the defense button and Alex ended up ducking and rolling when we wanted him to examine or do something.

THIS IS UNHEARD OF.

I'm trying to think of something nice to say about it, but so far there seriously isn't anything. I'm not particularly impressed with Alex's supposedly superior combat skills either.

I know I sound like I hate this game, but I don't. So far "meh" would be a good word to sum up my feelings about it. It's not a bad game, it's just not Silent Hill. And maybe that, by itself, is already pretty bad.

I'm placing my hope in the storyline. It's still early, may turn out well.

That horror stuff would still scare me!

Yeah, I jumped a few times too, but it's all just cheap scares. You know that fascinated feeling that you get when you see something that looks really scary, but in a beautiful sort of way? Like old abandoned houses? Silent Hill was all about that. Now it's just stuff to make you jump and then feel disgusted with yourself for jumping. :/

Yes, you're right.. There's a big difference.

I haven't played it (obviously) but I kind of thought it wouldn't surpass its predecessors. :/ Then again, it might still be good story-wise (like SH4 was. I LOVED the story but the gameplay ruined it for me).

From what I've seen from videos, I didn't really like how they presented the environment. The whole transition between the normal world and otherworld was just like in the movie. In the older games you never actually saw the transition, it just happened out of the blue (like in the first game). And that was really creepy!

Huh, I thought it'd have really good graphics. D: I mean, SH3 was absolutely stunning visually, SH4 was not bad either (though there was a major difference in the atmosphere), but I can't believe they aren't as good in SH5.

But the music is good, yes? :D

The graphics are definitely not up to scratch. I'm especially irritated by their glaringly white teeth. Allow me to demonstrate: Here are Alex and Henry side-by-side in similar poses.

See Alex's white teeth and how they go all the way to the corner of his mouth? I tell you that is damn disracting when animated, and that's the least of it. The characters can't emote convincingly at all. Their mouths move like they're made of rubber.

See how Henry's teeth are shaded? In a good render of a face you don't even notice the teeth most of the time. I even brightened the SH4 screenshot so that it's of comparable brightness to the SH5 one.

It's probably even more noticeable given the crispness of PS3 graphics, played on a 32" TV set. Seriously. SH5 just feels really rushed to me; I don't think the developers took as much time to put in the details as they should have.

I can't comment on the music much because it's mostly silence in the game. Not much use of music. I like what I've heard of the soundtrack, but I don't hear much of it in the game.

I can totally see what you mean. D: Maybe they use some kind of super toothpaste but it's still kind of awkward in a game. In a horror game.

Perhaps it was rushed. Then again, if Americans are behind animating it then there's naturally a quality difference because Japanese seem to be more advanced and experienced with these things. It's not just this game anyway, I've seen other games that are awesome by the standards around here while it's nothing compared to the stuff that comes from Japan.

Btw, can you play PS2 on your PS3?

I know about the lack in quality of American graphics, but I just find it very jarring in what was, up till now, a Japanese franchise. I'm a very visual consumer - I judge games, comics etc by their art and graphics - so this is a major bone of contention for me.

I've never tried playing PS2 games on the PS3. I still play them on my PS2. :)

I tend to judge things by visuals too, which is not always good (The Sandman comics being the best example. I never got into the art much but the stories are absolutely brilliant. <3 Ever read it?). There are also some really awesome older games that have cheap graphics but I don't think they should bring the standards down right now when the technology is so advanced.

Oh right, I forgot you had a PS2, too. xD I've decided to buy PS2 for Xmas so I could catch up with some games I've missed. I bought Okami and I can't wait to play it because it looks gorgeous! :3

I'm fine with older games that have bad graphics, because those graphics were probably good for their time.

I don't like Neil Gaiman's art either, and I can't get into the stories for that reason. Plus the stories - what I've seen of them - aren't up my alley.

The white complexion and super-white teeth, I suppose. Especially when compared to Henry's dark and rougher complexion. Makes Alex look super-white and smooth. Hence the vampire thing. :P

These are the little details I'm talking about that affect the realism of the game. With the old SH franchise the graphics were more gritty and realistic. In SH5 you can even see clearly where the textures have been repeated on the walls. :/

I donno. I'm interested to see what you think when you get a bit farther in it (if you haven't by the time I've posted this).

I'm not big on graphics, because my tv is far too small to see much difference between 4 and 5. Goodness knows I probably could see 1 in the same graphics as 2 or 5. But I kind of like it so far. Not my favorite, but a lot better than Origins I feel like.

I'm now just past the hotel part. Still no cool scares. Story hasn't developed much. Not sure if it's better than Origins, but then I couldn't even finish Origins, and it had way cooler monsters. :P
